U. OF CHICAGO MENS BASKETBALL TEAM WINS UAA TITLE; EARNS FIRST NCAA POST-SEASON BERTH IN 23 YEARS
With a pair of league wins on the road this weekend, the 17th-ranked University of Chicago mens basketball team clinched its first-ever University Athletic Association title and assured itself of its first NCAA post-season berth in 23 years.
Chicago defeated Brandeis University 69-64 on Friday night (Feb. 21), before edging New York University 74-66 on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 23). With the two victories, the Maroons extended their winning streak to 14 games and upped their season record to 19-4 overall, 12-1 in UAA play.
As a result of winning its first UAA title since the leagues formation 10 years ago, Chicago is guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship for the first time since the 1973-74 campaign. Bids and pairings for the 64-team tournament will be announced Sunday, Mar. 2, with first-round play set to begin on Thursday, Mar. 6.
Chicago closes out the regular season this week with home games against Savannah College on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7:00 p.m., and against UAA nemesis Washington University on Saturday, Mar. 1, at 1:00 p.m.
