Junior guard Aaron Horne (Skokie, Ill./Loyola Academy) and sophomore center Craig Kelleher (Norwood, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) scored 16 points apiece as the 17th-ranked University of Chicago defeated the Savannah College of Art & Design 64-49 in non-conference play Tuesday night at Chicago’s Henry Crown Field House.

The win was Chicago’s 15th straight and gave the Maroons their first 20-win season since the 1919-20 campaign. Chicago (20-4) has already clinched the University Athletic Association title, earning an automatic bid to the 1997 NCAA Division III Championship.

Chicago led 30-26 at the intermission and outscored the Bees 9-2 during the first 4:11 of the second half to take an 11-point lead at 39-28. Savannah A&D closed to within a basket at 40-38 with 10:27 remaining, but the Maroons held the Bees to just four points during the next 6:24 and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the game’s final four minutes.

Junior forward Matt Morycz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) contributed 12 points and nine rebounds for Chicago, while junior point guard Rusty Loyd (Columbus, Ind./North) finished with 10 points and eight assists.

Chicago closes out the regular season on Saturday, Mar. 1, when it hosts UAA rival Washington University at 1:00 p.m. Bids, pairings, and sites for the 1997 NCAA Division III Championship will be announced on Sunday, Mar. 2, with first-round play set to begin Thursday, Mar. 6.
