Paula Wolff Elected to the University of Chicago Board of Trustees

Paula Wolff, alumna of the University of Chicago and president of Governors State University, has been elected to the University of Chicago Board of Trustees. Her five-year term extends through June 2002.

Wolff recently succeeded Arthur Quern as Chair of the University of Chicago Hospitals Board of Trustees. She joined the governing board of the Hospitals in 1992.

Wolff served as director of policy and planning for Gov. James Thompson from 1977 to 1991, and she headed Gov. Jim Edgar’s transition team in 1990-91. As director of policy and planning, she directed development and implementation of policy for all areas of state government, serving as a liaison to 57 state agencies and chairing six subcabinets representing 67,000 state employees with a $25 billion budget. She was also a visiting distinguished fellow at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and was the acting chief executive officer and director of the Chicago Cluster Initiative, which coordinates public, social and educational services for Chicago youth.

Wolff is currently the director of the Joyce Foundation, a trustee of the Johnson Foundation and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Metropolitan Planning Council. She is a former Chairman and current member of the Board of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. She is also a member of the University of Chicago’s Council for the Division of the Biological Sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine and of the Visiting Committee to the University’s Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies.

Wolff earned her A.M. and her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago in 1969 and 1972, respectively. She lives in Hyde Park with her husband, Wayne Whalen, and their four children, two of whom have graduated from and two of whom are enrolled in the Laboratory Schools.
