University of Chicago to hold discussion on the case of a Mexican woman taking refuge in a Chicago church

Feb. 15, 2007

WHAT: Panel discussion will be held on the status of Elvira Arellano, a Mexican immigrant who has waged a long struggle to remain in Chicago with her 7-year-old son Saúl, a U.S. citizen. Facing a deportation order which she and her many supporters regard as cruel and unjust, Arellano and her son have taken refuge in a Chicago-area church since August of 2006.

WHO: Speaking will be Rev. Walter Coleman, pastor of the Adalberto United Methodist church where Ms. Arellano and her son are taking refuge, and Emma Lozano, director of the Centro Sin Fronteras, an immigration advocacy group.

WHAT: Tuesday February 20, 6 p.m.

WHERE: Social Science Research Building, 1126 E. 59th St., Room 122

The Katz Center for Mexican Studies at the University of Chicago is hosting the presentation and discussion. The media are welcome to attend and may contact William Harms, 773-702-8356, for more information.
