A coalition of different organizations here at University of Chicago that has organized many Darfur-related events during the last academic year – including a conference on Darfur last fall (“Crisis in Sudan”), two benefit concerts (“Giving Tree Peace Concert” in February and an a capella concert in May), and a refugee crisis discussion (in Spring, with Anne Bartlett of the Darfur Refugee Centre in London).
Continuing education activities this fall, the group is hosting a large speaker event on Darfur, Nov. 15. This will be a panel discussion to focus on the history of the violence and tension in the region, the humanitarian situation now, the escalating violence currently, the role of international NGOs in the conflict, and possible political solutions. The event is free and open to the public.
The event has the following cosponsors and organizers: The Giving Tree for Hunger Awareness; Justice for Darfur; Students for Human Rights; Human Rights Program, University of Chicago; Amnesty International, University of Chicago Chapter; the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture; and the Norman Walt Harris Fund of the Center for International Studies.
