Film version of alumnus David Auburn's 'Proof' coming to theaters Friday, Sept. 23
University of Chicago alumnus David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Proof is coming to the silver screen Friday, Sept. 23. Starring an Oscar Award-winning cast, led by Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal, the story focuses on a University of Chicago math professor (Hopkins) and the daughter (Paltrow) who has come to his aid as he struggles with mental illness. The movie was directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) and was filmed on campus and throughout Hyde Park and Chicago.
Auburn's play debuted at the Manhattan Theater Club in New York in 2000 and was instantly hailed by critics. In addition to a two-year, sold-out run on Broadway, the play was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 2001. Auburn's most recent work, The Journals of Mihail Sebastian, debuted in New York last year. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1991.
