Stella Raudenbush, 59, public policy and urban education scholar
Stella Raudenbush, 59, who was appointed last week to the University faculty, died Saturday, May 21, in Ann Arbor, Mich. Raudenbush, who was director of the Lives of Urban Children and Youth Initiative of the Michigan Community Scholars Program, had accepted an appointment as a Lecturer in Public Policy Studies in the College and as Program Director in Urban Education at the Center for Urban School Improvement.
Her husband, Stephen Raudenbush, Professor in the School of Education at the University of Michigan, has been named the Lewis-Sebring Professor in Sociology and Chair of the University’s new Committee on Education.
In addition to her studies of child development, Stella Raudenbush promoted service learning as an effective means for teaching and learning in K-16 education and was actively engaged in community/university partnerships that foster civic engagement and social justice. She received her M.Ed. degree from Harvard University and had recently published, with McClellan Hall, the book Gathering of Elders: Wisdom Teachings for the Service-Learning Movement.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children Jesse, Danielle and Catherine, all of Ann Arbor, Mich.; her parents Lemar and Maggie Pipkins of Buzzards Bay, Mass.; her siblings Elbert Pipkins of Buzzards Bay, Mass.; Jerrolyn Simpson of Jamaica Plain, Mass.; Robert Pipkins of Staten Island, N.Y.; Judy Leavis of Epping, N.H.; and Rottisha Mewborn of Buzzards Bay, Mass.; and by grandchildren Monica and Valentino Raudenbush of LaVergne, Tenn.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. 4th Ave., Ann Arbor, Mich., with family available between 1 and 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions are being accepted for the Stella Raudenbush Memorial Fund to assist undergraduate students from Detroit.
