U.S. Art Critics Association awards Smart Museum of Art "Best Exhibition"
For the first time in its 30-year history, the Smart Museum of Art has been honored by the International Association of Art Critics/ USA annual awards. The AICA awarded the Second Place Award for Best Thematic Museum Show presented in New York City to the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago and the International Center of Photography in New York for their exhibition "Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China."Ê
The exhibition, currently on view at the Smart Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago until January 16, 2005, offers the first comprehensive look at the innovative photo and video art produced since the mid-1990s in China. Featuring 130 works by 60 Chinese artists, many of whom are exhibiting for the first time in the U.S., the exhibition reflects the enthusiastic use of media-based art by younger Chinese artists. Their works, often ambitious in scale and experimental in nature, present a range of highly individual responses to the unprecedented changes now taking place in China's economy, society, and culture. In addition to introducing a remarkable body of work to American audiences, the exhibition provides insight into the dynamics of Chinese culture at the start of the 21st century.
Exhibition Curators Wu Hung, Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago and Consulting Curator at the Smart Museum, and Christopher Phillips, Curator at the International Center of Photography, will accept the award at the AICA Awards ceremony on January 25, 2005, at the newly renovated Museum of Modern Art in New York City. MoMA Chief Curator John Elderfield will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event, which will be attended by museum curators, artists, and gallerists from around the country.
Each year, the United States section of the International Association of Art Critics invites its nearly 400 members to vote for the best exhibitions crated during that season. The International Association of Art Critics/USA Awards are given in recognition of exceptional work by artists, curators, gallerists, critics, scholars, and cultural institutions. AICA is the only organization to formally recognize excellence in this cultural arena. The annual AICA Awards are the art-world equivalent to those given by the New York film Critics Circle and the Drama Desk.
