Magill named Director of Laboratory Schools
David Magill, a distinguished school administrator and educator from suburban Philadelphia, has been appointed Director of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools.
President Randel made the appointment based on the recommendation of the Board of Directors of the Laboratory Schools, which conducted a yearlong, nationwide search for a new director to lead the Laboratory Schools, which serves 1,650 students.
As part of the search process, David has visited our community, met with board members, parents, faculty, administrators and students, said Susan Sher, Chair of the Board. We believe David Magill has demonstrated strong leadership and management skills, decisiveness, and a strong commitment to diversity and excellence in education.
Magill will begin his duties when the 2003-2004 school year starts. Beverly Biggs, Principal of the Lower School, is serving as Interim Director for the current school year.
Magill recently retired from the Lower Merion School District in Ardmore, Pa., where he has served as superintendent since 1991. The K-12 school district has 6,600 students, and Magill introduced a number of innovations, including foreign language study beginning at second grade and an International Baccalaureate Program, providing high school students with advanced opportunities.
He previously served in administrative positions in a number of Pennsylvania school districts and began his career as an elementary and special education teacher in Philadelphia public schools.
He received a B.S. from Ohio State University in 1970, an Ed.M. in 1973 and an Ed.D. in 1982, both from Temple University.
