Ape ancestors may have taught us to coo to baby
CHICAGO Monkeys have their own form of baby-talk, just as human parents regress into high-pitched babble when they coo over babies, researchers have found.
Observations of rhesus monkeys, show that females watching infants born to other mothers emit “grunts and girneys” adapted for use with the youngsters.
The study, by researchers at the University of Chicago, suggests that the high-pitched “motherese” employed by humans may have been passed on by mankind’s primate ancestors.
The findings are published in the journal Ethology.
