The University of Chicago's new $100 million arts center, slated for completion in 2011, will be named after a local couple who recently donated $35 million toward its construction, report the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune.
University officials told the paper that David and Reva Logan's contribution is the largest cash gift for the arts in the city's history.
The 180,000-square-foot building at 60th Street and Ingleside Avenue, at the southern end of the campus. will be used for visual arts, theater, dance, music and film.
According to the Tribune, David Logan is most impressed with the university's plan to open the arts center's programs to the local community.
"I think it's going to open up the school a little," said Logan, who graduated from the University of Chicago in 1939 and received a law degree there in 1941. Reva Logan, a former teacher, also attended the University as an undergraduate.
An architect for the Reva and David Logan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts will be selected later this month.
