U of C gets $35-million gift
(Crain’s) — The University of Chicago is receiving two major gifts, one of them believed to be the largest of its type ever made in the city.
The first donation, a $35-million cash gift from the family of Reva and David Logan, will be used to support the University’s Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, which will be named in their honor.
“This is a historic gift that will have a tremendous impact not only on our students, faculty and community, but on the future of the arts in Chicago,” said University President Robert Zimmer. The university believes it’s the largest such gift ever made in Chicago.
Mr. Zimmer emphasized that the new building at 60th Street and Ingleside Avenue will promote “dynamic collaboration” by bringing the visual arts, theatre and performance, music and film together under one roof.
Mr. Logan is a 1939 U of C graduate and a 1941 graduate of its law school. Ms. Logan also attended U of C as an undergraduate and is a former teacher. The couple have funded a variety of academic endeavors, including an illustrated books collection at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the Jazz Loft Project at Duke University and a faculty position in investigative journalism at the University of California at Berkeley.
Details of the second donation are being held for release until Friday evening.
