U. of C. professor awarded prize

Published March 16, 2006

A University of Chicago professor is one of two recipients of a prestigious prize for work in economics and mathematics, Northwestern University announced on Wednesday.

Lars Peter Hansen, the Livingston Distinguished Service Professor at U. of C., won the Nemmers Prize for work that applied economic theory to the actual operations of the economy and markets and for research on how best to come up with policy in an uncertain environment, according to the selection committee.

Hansen said he was honored to receive the award.

"I was really very surprised," he said. "The previous winners are ... very distinguished economists."

Three of the six winners in economics have gone on to win the Nobel Prize for their work, said John Margolis, Northwestern's associate provost. The Nemmers Prizes also include a $150,000 stipend.

Margolis said there are about 100 nominations each year for the prizes, which are winnowed down to the two finalists by a panel of three professors. This year's selection committee was made up of panelists from Northwestern, the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University.
