Two University of Chicago students named Rhodes Scholars

Two students from the University of Chicago were named today as Rhodes Scholars for 2005.

Ian Desai graduated this year with a bachelor's degree in Ancient Studies. He received a university prize for his collection of poetry, and was elected a student marshal. The 22-year-old is a New York City native.

Andrew Kim is a first-generation Korean-American from Marlton, New Jersey.

He graduated in June with a political science degree. He hopes to eventually work for the government or a nonprofit, focusing on refugee issues.

Thirty-two American college students were selected for the scholarships, which provide two or three years of study at Oxford University in England.

Rhodes Scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes.
